Con Te Partirò (Time to Say Goodbye)

Words and music by Francesco Sartori and Lucio Quarantotto; Arranged by Elena Fortin

Con Te Partirò (Time To Say Goodbye) Cover

This piece was made famous by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman–two classical artists that brought more mainstream listeners to this type of music. The piece has gone on to become something of a signature song for Mr. Bocelli.

The direct translation of “Con te Partirò” is “I’ll Leave with You”. English lyrics were changed to “Time to Say Goodbye”, making it one of those songs that has been used for weddings and funerals.

The piece has been translated into several different languages, and has topped the charts in several countries, been covered by many different performers, been sampled, and has been used in films, sports, and television.

For me, I chose to arrange this song because it has one of those beautiful melodies that is timeless and has staying power.

About the arrangement

This 5 page arrangement is written in the key of D major (2 sharps), with a modulation to the key of A major (3 sharps) towards the end of the song. The piece is a beautiful, expressive one and should be played cantabile (in a singing style). The arrangement explores sweeping arpeggios in the left hand, full chordal textures, rhythm figures of three notes vs. four notes or two notes, and is written in a classical style.

I often hear book authors comment that sometimes the characters in their books do the unexpected. I could say the same about this piece! I intended it to be a romantic-style interpretation, but I had been following news stories that turned the ending assertively in a Tchaikovsky-piano-concerto-like style… The ending is full of power and hope.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Composed by John Wyeth; Arranged by Elena Fortin

Come Thou Fount Cover

Come Thou Fount is a beautiful Christian hymn, written by pastor Robert Robinson in 1758. The tune that I based this arrangement on comes from a John Wyeth melody called “Nettleton”.

Come Thou Fount of every blessing

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;

Streams of mercy, never ceasing,

Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet,

Sung by flaming tongues above.

Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,

Mount of God’s unchanging love.

In an interesting back story, (you can read the full story at enjoyingthejourney.org). I learned that Robert Robinson wrote the hymn, and years later when he wandered away from God, a young women (ironically not knowing who he was) quoted from the hymn and shared with him how much of an encouragement it had been to her.

About the arrangement

This arrangement is for the intermediate player and is written in the key of D major. The arrangement is simple, but should be played expressively. The first repetition of the hymn is written with a flowing left hand accompaniment with the right hand in chordal style. In the second repetition, the melody becomes more of a melodic line and flows along with the left hand accompaniment. The third repetition introduces an inner voice countermelody in the right hand. The final verse is more majestic in style.

You Raise Me Up

Words and music by Brendan Graham and Rolf Loveland; Arranged by Elena Fortin

You Raise Me Up Cover

You Raise Me Up has been covered by many artists, most notably Josh Groban. I decided to arrange this song because it is a favourite of my Mom’s. I dedicate the arrangement to my Mom and Dad because they are the ones that were willing to get me music lessons and supported me during all these years of lessons, practising, and playing!

About the arrangement

This arrangement is written for the early advanced/advanced pianist–it has left hand arpeggios and chords that cover most of the range of the piano, and full chords in the right hand which may be difficult for some people.

The song starts in the key of E flat and modulates to F major near the end. Each repeat of verse and chorus is slightly different. My favourite one is the crashing chords in the right hand near the end–it reminds me of the ocean! I decided to end it with both hands in the treble clef, for a sweet, quieter finish.

Amazing Grace

Traditional; Arranged by Elena Fortin

Amazing Grace Cover

Amazing Grace is a beautiful, traditional hymn with well-known lyrics penned by John Newton. The original hymn was published in 1779, with the words written in 1772!

This piece is one of those songs that can be used for many different reasons. I’ve heard it used in worship services, as a hymn of praise and faith, as celebration of life lived, and as a prayer of thanksgiving.

About the arrangement

This arrangement is for the intermediate player. The arrangement is simple, but should be played expressively. Make the melody sing! Each repetition of the hymn is slightly different: the second repetition uses the harmonic framework/structure but introduces a new invented melody by me. (You can hum the melodic line of Amazing Grace over the top of this second repetition and you’ll see what I mean).

The very last repetition of the verse should be played “allargando” which means slightly slower, and more broadly. Enjoy those left hand octave notes and full chords!

Fight Song

Words and music by Rachel Platten and Dave Basset; Arranged by Elena Fortin

Fight Song Cover

I have been working on an arrangement project to arrange and post videos of songs that I consider to be important either in the way they touch listeners, in how they are used, or if they have stood the test of time.

“…like a small boat … sending big waves into motion“–Fight Song has been used as a rallying song, a pick-me up song, an inspirational song, and a piece to remind ourselves to be confident. The piece was written by Rachel Platten and Dave Bassett and has become an anthem for any person that is going through a challenge. Whether it is dealing with a physical illness or health challenge, personal trial, loss, or life’s difficulties, this song has been a comfort to many.

The song was recorded in 2014 and won iHeartRadio’s Music Award for Best Lyrics. When I pick songs to arrange, they are often ones that play over and over in my brain. I’ve been working on this one for several weeks. It is a very powerful song about faith and belief.

About the arrangement

My arrangement is for the early advanced player. The arrangement is powerful and starts quite simply but builds and builds into powerful repetitions of the chorus with arpeggios in the left hand and in the right hand. It makes use of the powerful bass end of the piano too! I hope that you enjoy it!

What a Wonderful World

Words and music by George David Weiss and Bob Thiele; Arranged by Elena Fortin

What a Wonderful World Cover

What a Wonderful World was written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss. The piece was recorded and made famous by icon Louis Armstrong.

The story of the recording was pretty cool: Louis was in Las Vegas and the recording was setup to take place after a midnight gig. They started recording and were interrupted by a recording executive who was annoyed that Louis wasn’t recording an upbeat number like another one of his hits, “Hello, Dolly”.

After the executive was thrown out, train whistles interrupted the recording. The final take wasn’t done until 6 a.m.! In order to make sure that the orchestra members were paid for their overtime work, Louis asked to be paid only union scale for his work ($250 at the time)! What a Wonderful World indeed.

About the arrangement

This arrangement was written as a smooth piano solo, but I included the words because I love how they tell a story. I decided to make it an Intermediate/Early Advanced piano solo. The melody is supported by chords in the RH, and the left hand is arpeggios of chords for the most part, with a stride LH bass for the middle section. It is such a beautiful melody, it isn’t decorated much except for a few bridges between verses.
