Four Variations on a Theme by Handel (Sarabande)

on Sarabande in D minor by Handel

Original Music by Elena Fortin

Variations on a Theme by Sarabande Cover

Handel wrote the Suite in D minor, HWV 437. The Sarabande is the fourth movement in the suite and is written as a theme with two variations. Generations of keyboard players have studied this piece.

It is still listed as a List A (Baroque) selection in the Royal Conservatory Examination List for Level 6. The series is redone every 7 years and I have seen it get brought back for edition after edition. It’s a favourite with teachers and students. I learned it many years ago for my Level 6 exam and it has always been one of my favourite pieces from the Baroque period: it is smooth, lyrical, and more expressive than most of the other choices from that era.

I started out with writing three variations as part of a creative challenge. The following year, I added an extra variation and published the sheet music.

About the arrangement

The original Sarabande was written as a Theme and Variations. The Theme was done in keyboard style: triads in the right hand, a simple bass line in the left hand. Handel’s first variation was contrapuntal in texture: weaving lines of melody made a beautiful horizontal line. Handel’s second variation is chords in the right hand and a left hand melodic bass line.

I used Handel’s theme and variations as a framework for my variations–using his harmonic framework as the structure for my variations.

Variation 1: is a moody waltz feel that turns the feel of the Sarabande into 3/4 meter with the pulse of a typical waltz: “strong-weak-weak”, with a touch of rubato (stretched, elastic time) thrown in to give a little bit more abandon.

Variation 2: is a military march-like interpretation of the theme. It has lots of leaps and accents and is a challenge to play!

Variation 3: is a departure from the 3/4 time with a switch into a contemporary, expressive-feeling 4/4 time signature with lots of suspended chords.

Variation 4: continues in the feel of a pulse of 4, this time turned into triplets. (I marked it as 12/8 time just for ease of writing). This variation is different–you can play it quickly in a stormy fashion, or slightly slower like a babbling brook.

What a Wonderful World

Words and music by George David Weiss and Bob Thiele; Arranged by Elena Fortin

What a Wonderful World Cover

What a Wonderful World was written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss. The piece was recorded and made famous by icon Louis Armstrong.

The story of the recording was pretty cool: Louis was in Las Vegas and the recording was setup to take place after a midnight gig. They started recording and were interrupted by a recording executive who was annoyed that Louis wasn’t recording an upbeat number like another one of his hits, “Hello, Dolly”.

After the executive was thrown out, train whistles interrupted the recording. The final take wasn’t done until 6 a.m.! In order to make sure that the orchestra members were paid for their overtime work, Louis asked to be paid only union scale for his work ($250 at the time)! What a Wonderful World indeed.

About the arrangement

This arrangement was written as a smooth piano solo, but I included the words because I love how they tell a story. I decided to make it an Intermediate/Early Advanced piano solo. The melody is supported by chords in the RH, and the left hand is arpeggios of chords for the most part, with a stride LH bass for the middle section. It is such a beautiful melody, it isn’t decorated much except for a few bridges between verses.

Winter Storm

Original Music by Elena Fortin, Inspired by J.S. Bach

Winter Storm Cover

In high school, I took a music enrichment class and one of the projects was to take J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C major and write a new melody to go over top. (That’s what Charles Gounod did to create a new version of Ave Maria).

So I took that assignment one step further (and yes, it’s been a long time since high school)! I took J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C minor (BMV 999) and remixed it with an original melody in the style of Frederic Chopin: the result was a perfect storm! A perfect ‘Winter Storm’ that is.

This piece was written for the advanced pianist. It would make an excellent selection for a solo recital. The piece sounds like something written in the Romantic period. If you like Chopin’s Etudes or Nocturnes, the style is similar to that!

About the arrangement

I took the Bach Prelude in C Minor (a List A selection in the Level 6 Repertoire Book in the Celebration Series by the Royal Conservatory of Music) and put it all in the left hand, with some adjustments in the order of notes, while staying as true to the harmonies as possible. Then I thought about what a dramatic diva would present as a melody and put that in the right hand. What resulted was a Chopinesque passionate storm with trills, cadenzas, arpeggios, chords in 6ths, and interesting rhythmic subdivisions.

Hidden Pathways

Original Music by Elena Fortin

Hidden Pathways Cover

Hidden Pathways is an original piano piece by Elena Fortin. The style is flowing, gentle, peaceful, soothing, and uplifting.

Did you ever go wandering through the woods and find some unknown pathway that no one else has traveled before? And did you follow it and find some enchanted little destination that you wish you could re-visit again and again? While I was writing, I had that image in my mind–a place of sunlight, quiet, and peace.

About the arrangement

The piece is written in D-flat major–a key signature with 5 flats. It’s a pretty key–and not as hard to play as you might think. When your flats or sharps reach a certain number, it becomes easier to think of what notes are NOT black keys! So in this case, any “C’s” and “F’s” (“DO”s and “FA”s for solfège learners) are the only white notes.

The flat keys “fit” the hands really well–you play mostly on the black keys for the piece. “Hidden Pathways” could probably be classified as “New Age” or “Neo-Classical” in sound. It’s just a pretty instrumental that explores and wanders–just like that walk in the woods!

Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town

(…and He’s Rockin’ the Blues!)

Music by J. Fred Coots, Lyrics by Haven Gillespie; Arranged by Elena Fortin

Santa Claus is Comin' To Town Cover

Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town is a Christmas classic! And one that comes to mind as being a carol that is often “re-imagined” in different styles. It’s been recorded by a lot of different artists in varying styles–I hear the rock version quite a bit during the holiday season.

The arrangement grew out of my awe for blues pianists and early rock n’ rollers. I love the sound of the blues and how the pianists mimic (to the best of their ability) the blue notes, slides, and motifs that seem so easy on the guitar! Their playing is almost at polar opposites from my classical upbringing but still so fun to play!

The original piece was written by J. Fred Coots with lyrics by Haven Gillespie.

About the arrangement

I thought it’d be fun to write a version of Santa Claus coming to town and having a great ole rollicking blues time! So I set out to write a blues version of this classic. Take the carol, add a thumpin’ left hand bass line, throw in some blues scales/runs/tremelos and blue notes (grace notes to us classical players), and you get a Christmas carol that is showy, fun to play, and makes you want to dance.

In blues playing: the style of playing blue (grace) notes is a little different than in classical playing. For blues–the notes “mash” together, sometimes you use the same finger to slide off from a black key to a white key, and generally add a little more dissonance.

I thought it was really fun how well the blues genre fit in with Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town. One of my little students that loves the blues heard this version and his eyes lit up and he said, “I didn’t know you could turn that song into a blues song!”

Video Performance

This video is a little different than my other ones. My recording equipment went on the fritz and I ended up just doing a video of Christmas images with the Musescore playback recording doing the playing. That’s why the playing sounds robotic–but it gives you an idea of what the music is like.

True Colors

Words and music by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly; Arranged by Elena Fortin

True Colours Cover

This ballad was a hit back in the 80’s by Cyndi Lauper. It was also recorded by Phil Collins, Jenna Ushkowitz (from Glee), and as a duet by Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick. I can’t say which one is my favourite, I’ve listened to all of them and like them all for different reasons!

About the arrangement

This is my first arrangement of a pop song. I wrote it as an advanced arrangement–there are some complicated syncopated rhythms, and large stretches for chords. But it has such a beautiful melody and a lovely message with the lyrics too!

The Christmas Song

Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire

Music and Lyrics by Mel Tormé and Robert Wells; Arranged by Elena Fortin

The Christmas Song Cover

This beautiful Christmas piece with music and lyrics by Mel Torme and Robert Wells is a popular one! The beautiful melody raises interesting possibilities for harmonies and arranging. So many legendary performers have recorded this one–I think one of my childhood favourites is the smooth version by Nat King Cole.

Usually if you name this Christmas Carol by the title “The Christmas Song”, people think they don’t know it. But as soon as you say, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…” you get instant recognition. The lyrics always make me think about the good things that Christmas brings!

About the arrangement

The arrangement is an advanced Piano solo. Some of the challenges in the song include fast, jazzy runs, two-against-three rhythms, playing expressively and with rubato, and I’ve thrown in some challenging chords too! (I like to describe rubato as an elastic tempo–you can bend and stretch it where you feel it needs it!)

The piece has a lot of jazzy flourishes that are pattern-based. Unlock the pattern and away you go! Make sure that you use both hands to do the jazzy runs on the last page–and try to figure out what chords they are to make it easier to play these flourishes quickly and lightly.

Now and then I will hop on Google and see if any new videos have popped up with my name on it. (I love that people buy my music and love it enough to memorize it and post a video)! Here is a link to a YouTube video of the lovely Jeanne Costello. She did a great job learning, memorizing, and then posting my arrangement.

The First Noël

Traditional; Arranged by Elena Fortin

The First Noël Cover

Musicians are always preparing music ahead of the season, so after our first snow, it is already time to get out the Christmas music! (Yes, in Canada, it sometimes snows for Hallowe’en–ugh!) I found an e-mail in my inbox, telling me about an arranging contest at Sheet Music Plus. Unfortunately, the contest deadline was in 12 hours. Fortunately, I made it. It’s always interesting to see what creativity can happen when you are under a tight deadline!

The traditional carol, The First Noël, is from the 13th or 14th Century and came out of Cornwall! A testament to its longevity, message, and melody, the carol was published in a collection of ancient Christmas carols, getting transcribed in 1823. This breathed new life into the song and I am doing my part to keep it alive!

About the arrangement

The arrangement is written for Intermediate pianists. The right hand plays in the upper treble register of the piano and begins with the main melody in the left hand. Most often, melodies are put in the right hand with harmony in the left, but flipping this around puts the melody in the “tenor” register of the piano and gives a depth to the melody.

Each repetition of the verse is altered slightly. The second verse returns the melody to the right hand, but written in chordal style. The last verse is slightly slower, and should be played with bell-like tone on the accents.

It is a very sweet, simple arrangement and will hopefully spread hope and joy as it did many years ago when the people of Cornwall would sing it in the streets to express their excitement and wonder at Christmas.
