Winter Storm

Original Music by Elena Fortin, Inspired by J.S. Bach

Winter Storm Cover

In high school, I took a music enrichment class and one of the projects was to take J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C major and write a new melody to go over top. (That’s what Charles Gounod did to create a new version of Ave Maria).

So I took that assignment one step further (and yes, it’s been a long time since high school)! I took J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C minor (BMV 999) and remixed it with an original melody in the style of Frederic Chopin: the result was a perfect storm! A perfect ‘Winter Storm’ that is.

This piece was written for the advanced pianist. It would make an excellent selection for a solo recital. The piece sounds like something written in the Romantic period. If you like Chopin’s Etudes or Nocturnes, the style is similar to that!

About the arrangement

I took the Bach Prelude in C Minor (a List A selection in the Level 6 Repertoire Book in the Celebration Series by the Royal Conservatory of Music) and put it all in the left hand, with some adjustments in the order of notes, while staying as true to the harmonies as possible. Then I thought about what a dramatic diva would present as a melody and put that in the right hand. What resulted was a Chopinesque passionate storm with trills, cadenzas, arpeggios, chords in 6ths, and interesting rhythmic subdivisions.
